FIRST ONEXE YOUTH SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP, LAST WEEKEND ON THE NORTH SHORE OF FUERTEVENTURA AND CO SPONSORED BY PROTEST SURFCENTER, WAS A GIANT SUCCES!
Last weekend the first event of the Canarian Surfing Championships, the Onexe Championship, took place here at the North Shore of Fuerteventura, also know as Europe’s Hawaii. More than 100 participants competed in perfect sunny conditions with glassy 1 meter waves and no wind all weekend. Our Protest Surfcenter co sponsored the event because we love stimulating kids and youngsters to go surfing and enjoy the beach!
Our local Protest Surfcenter Happy Surfkids club was well represented with 12 participants and although some of our little ones didn’t dare entering the rocky water all of them had a great time on the beach in an amazing atmosphere full of happy faces. Those who did participate in the water really amazed us with their courage, talent and sportsmanship! Our youngest participants Yann (8), Tindaya (9) and Alba (11) surfed their first competition in the sub12 division and got lots of cheers for their display of talent. Niam (12), who some of you may know because he was with us all summer in the advanced lessons, even got through to the semi finals of the sub14 division where he showed no fear in the difficult Bubble waves.
Also our bigger Young Guns were fully charging! David and Joe were showing great surfing but lacked a bit of luck and good waves during their heat. All eyes were then on Tom Beck (15), who helps us every week teaching surfing to our local kids. He showed not only to have lots of talent but also that he is a good competitor managing to steel his nerves and reach the semi-finals of the sub18.
Special thanks to Gianluca, Marc and all the kids and parents that came to see or participate, you made it all a fantastic event and we and our Young Guns Team will be ready and full of energy at the next event, organised at Playa Blanca in Puerto del Rosario in July.
Lots of thanks also to Nayra and all volunteers of the Onexe Surfclub, the local authorities and all locals for making this possible!
